Mugabe clamps down on opposition for flimsy reasons.

A report from Harare says the leader of Zimbabwe’s once powerful war veterans’ association, Victor Matemadanda, is now in police custody.

His arrest is believed to be part of a growing crackdown on critics of President Robert Mugabe after a series of rare protests.

Matemadanda, who is Secretary-General of Zimbabwe’s National Liberation War Veterans Association, was arrested at a court hearing of a colleague facing charges of insulting President Mugabe.

The allegation against Matemadanda is that he is “undermining Mugabe”.
